Hamakua forest is beautiful and nature at its finest. At 700 meters the air is cool and the weather depending on the time of year can be wet or somewhat dry. Being on the wetside of the island there are not many days I would say the ground is dry. Drive up to park and see the facilities and camp sites. Walk the various nature hiking trails, use your mountain bike or 4x4 vehicle on one of the trials. Enjoy all of the tropical plants and wildlife, mountainous areas, waterfalls and gorges. You can hike from 1 mile to over 5 miles depending which trails you choose to take. I would apply a little mosquito repellant if your prone to attracting mosquitos more than others. Bring a camera for the views and untouched nature and various flowers and plants.
Gorgeous! Beautiful camping location too!
Great
The signs and brochures call this Kalopa Native Forest State Park and Recreation Area. The arboretum is a beautifully maintained park of grassy areas interspersed with native trees. Next to is is an area of natural forest with a guided nature trail. Picnic areas, campground, and cabins for rent by boy scout troops and the like, with a dining room/kitchen.
Beautiful trails but a bit too muddy the day we tried
Great for families.
